The North Yorkshire village of Sheriff Hutton lies in the Ryedale district of the county. It has a rich history and was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Hotun. The Manor of Sheriff Hutton passed through many hands and, at one stage, was owned by the Bulmer family. Today the village is known for its racing stables, but in the middle of the 19th century it held its own series of race meetings. The inaugural meeting was held at Cow Pastures, just below Sheriff Hutton Castle, on Tuesday 11th April 1865, and it was deemed to be so successful that meetings continued to be held for the next 6 years. The third meeting was staged on Tuesday 2nd April 1867 when the Prince of Wales Stakes went to The Witch and the Princess Alexandra Stakes to Mark Tapley. At the meeting on Tuesday 12th April 1870 The Prince of Wales Stakes over 3 miles, as well as the following Hunters’ Stakes, were won by Maid of the Morning who beat Gamester and Topsy in both races. The final meeting took place on Wednesday 5th April 1871. |
